Description

This show-stopping soccer cake is perfect for any soccer fan! Made with a rich chocolate base, creamy cocoa frosting, and soccer-themed fondant decorations, it’s a delicious way to celebrate birthdays, team victories, or game days.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (or gluten-free blend)
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk (or milk + 1 tbsp vinegar)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

For the Frosting:

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Green food coloring

For the Decorations:

  • White fondant
  • Black food coloring marker

Instructions

  • Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • Combine Dry Ingredients: In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine the buttermilk, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract.
  • Combine Wet and Dry: Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing on low speed until just combined.
  • Add Boiling Water: Slowly pour in the boiling water while mixing on low speed. The batter will be thin—this is normal!
  • Bake: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool: Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the Frosting: While the cakes cool, beat the softened butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, alternating with milk, until smooth. Stir in vanilla extract.
  • Frost the Cake: Level the cake layers if necessary. Frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake. Tint some frosting green to mimic a soccer field.
  • Decorate: Roll out the white fondant and cut out pentagons and hexagons to resemble a soccer ball. Use a black food coloring marker to draw the lines, then attach the fondant pieces to the cake with a little water.

Notes

  • ry different flavors like vanilla or funfetti for variety.
  • For extra filling, add chocolate ganache or raspberry jam between layers.
  • If short on time, skip fondant and use green frosting to create a soccer field design.
